K\u00e4the Kollwitz came from a liberal, politically committed family. Against convention, she received training as a visual artist. With her husband Karl Kollwitz, a young doctor, she went to Berlin, where she lived in Prenzlauer Berg for over fifty years. She successfully exhibited her art throughout Europe, was involved in numerous political and social initiatives, and had an extensive network of friends, acquaintances, and colleagues. She was highly respected in society until the end of the Weimar Republic, but during the Nazi era she was ostracized and her work was hindered. She died in Moritzburg, Saxony, shortly before the end of the Second World War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
