{"id":2215,"date":"2023-07-10T16:20:12","date_gmt":"2023-07-10T14:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kaethe-kollwitz-digital.de\/unkategorisiert\/a-weavers-revolt\/"},"modified":"2023-09-05T16:28:55","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T14:28:55","slug":"a-weavers-revolt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kaethe-kollwitz-digital.de\/en\/permanent-exhibition\/a-weavers-revolt\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;A Weavers&#8217; Revolt&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">A graphic series about the uprising of the Silesian weavers in 1844. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">The first three lithographs depict misery, hardship and despair in the weavers&#8217; families, while the following three etchings tell of the uprising and its fatal outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a young artist and new mother K\u00e4the Kollwitz sat in the audience of the Freie B\u00fchne and witnessed the premiere of <em>The Weavers<\/em> by Gerhart Hauptmann on February 26, 1893. The play struck her &#8220;with an unbelievable force.&#8221; (Brief an G. Hauptmann im Januar 1913, Staatsbibliothek Berlin Nachlass GH) At home in her living room studio, she put aside the scene from \u00c9mile Zola&#8217;s <em>Germinal<\/em> and set to work on a new cycle that would bring her her artistic breakthrough.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"720\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1280 \/ 720;\" width=\"1280\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaethe-kollwitz-digital.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Ein_Weberaufstand_ENG.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Video about &#8216;A Weavers&#8217; Revolt&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The series was a great success and sold well. K\u00e4the was able to contribute monetarily to the family&#8217;s household, and she received a teaching position at the K\u00fcnstlerinnenschule in Berlin, an art school for women artists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;(&#8230;) I sold the weavers at the big exhibition for five hundred marks. Isn&#8217;t that splendid? Finally, finally the Schmerzenskind was ready to be exhibited. I put it in a beautiful frame and sent it to the exhibition. It was excellently hung and already sold on the third day. (&#8230;) Five hundred marks, and for a unique (admittedly framed) print. Not even for the printing plates.
