A Style Shift

The next etching cycle, which Käthe Kollwitz completed in 1908 after a long period of work, was dedicated to the Peasants’ War and, like many of her works, was inspired by literature. The large format of the sheets testifies to an increased self-confidence as an artist and an absolute mastery of the etching technique, while the discarded works for the cycle point to her slow working method and the laborious repression of narrative elements and symbolist motifs.
