Karl Kollwitz’s work as a doctor in Prenzlauer Berg gave Käthe Kollwitz a deep insight into the problems of the time, such as housing shortages, family violence, alcoholism and unwanted pregnancies. The artistic motif of working people, which was initially seen as merely charming, became a serious social concern for the artist. Kollwitz achieved widespread attention with the full-page drawings “Pictures of Misery” in the magazine Simplicissimus.
